In the past Smith Pearman have raised considerable sums for national charities such as the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research and decided that instead of raising money for national associations they would prefer to directly help the local disadvantaged, particularly disabled people, and formed their own Charitable Trust.
The first group to benefit was Sailability at Papercourt Sailing Club. Sailability is a national charity that gives disabled people the opportunity to experience sailing and is supported by the RYA, although it is nationally funded it needed money at a local level. Over the last two years the Smith Pearman Charitable Trust has been able to donate two specially constructed and adapted sailing dinghies, buoyancy aids and other equipment. The Smith Pearman Charitable Trust is pleased to continue to support Sailability at Papercourt Sailing Club.
From 2007 the Charitable Trust will also support another charity, Canine Partners, who provide help to the disabled. Canine Partners transforms the lives of people with disabilities by partnering them with highly trained assistance dogs, enabling those with disabilities to live more independently and enjoy an enhanced lifestyle. Trained dogs help in many ways, retrieving dropped keys or other personal items, loading and unloading washing machines, picking items from supermarket shelves, assisting dressing, undressing and responding to emergency situations. Strong bonds are formed between the trained dog and their dependent partner. Smith Pearman Charitable Trust have committed to sponsoring the training and partnering of a puppy, a process that will take approximately eighteen months.

Canine Partners have their headquarters in Midhurst. The dogs begin their training as eight week old puppies. They live with a volunteer puppy parent and attend weekly training sessions for the first year. At around 14 months they begin advanced training for up to six months. Smith Pearman will be allocated a puppy in the near future and we will keep you informed of its progress. Eventually it is hoped that our puppy will be placed with a partner living locally.
If you have the urge to raise money to support the training of Guy and other support dogs by sky diving, whitewater rafting, trekking through Peru or over Kilimanjaro or cycling across Cuba, you can!
You find the sponsors, The Smith Pearman Charitable Trust can get it organised. For details contact us at 01483 225457 or email keith@smithpearman.com
